Val d'Orcia

Unesco World Heritage



Val d'Orcia is a decidedly large territory located south of Tuscany, in the province of Siena, delimited by Mount Amiata on one side and by the borders with Umbria on the other.


Pienza Pienza is undoubtedly the most famous village in the Val d'Orcia. It is the famous Ideal City desired by Pope Enea Silvio Piccolomini – Pius II, where history, art and culture intertwine among the characteristic streets with equally characteristic names: via del Bacio , via dell'Amore, via della Fortuna, just to name a few. But Pienza is also renowned for a typical food product, the result of an ancient tradition proudly carried forward over the centuries: the excellent Pecorino di Pienza. During walks through the historic centre, alternating with buildings of great historical and architectural value, there are numerous shops in which to stop and taste this unique delicacy. Bagno Vignoni Despite its very small size, the village of Bagno Vignoni  is, together with Pienza, one of the most famous in the Val d'Orcia, but also in Italy we could say. This is thanks to its peculiarity: in the center of the town, instead of finding a square, we find a pool of hot thermal water in which all the surrounding buildings are reflected. To enjoy the beneficial volcanic waters, you cannot miss a bath in the Parco dei Mulini.


San Quirico d'Orcia

One of the central locations of the Val d'Orcia is  San Quirico , known since ancient times as an unmissable stop for pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena heading towards Rome. The marvelous Horti Leonini and the Chapel are worth a visit of Vitaleta.


Montalcino

Previously we mentioned the renowned cheeses of Pienza. Now it is the turn of the magnificent wines of  Montalcino , a medieval village that dominates the Val d'Orcia with its imposing Fortress. In the village, history and tradition are closely intertwined, taking the visitor back in time, accompanied from a glass of excellent Brunello.


Montepulciano

The town of Montepulciano is also located right on a border, the one with the nearby Val di Chiana, and is also, together with Montalcino, the pride of local wine production. The ancient cellars scattered throughout the area with their wines are worth a visit. basements full of treasures contained in ancient wooden barrels.
